I was asked to do my take on a Warhammer 40k Sentinel. So of course it had to be painted up as a WW2 tank! Thanks to the wonderful people over at the Squidmar Discord server for gifting me this kit. How to disassemble Leitz Summitar aperture ring

How to disassemble the aperture ring on a Leitz Summitar 50mm f/2 lens. These rings will usually have old, dried grease in them and will be almost impossible to change the f-stop. Use your preferred grease. Remember, rather too little grease than too much!!

How to properly load a Leica III
Переглядів 53 тис.7 років тому
There are many videos on UA-cam where people show you how to load film into the old screwmount Leicas by putting your fingers inside an open shutter. This is a quick way to ruin your camera. This shows the proper way of loading your Leica with film.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 Video Footage Compilation

Raw footage straight from the SD-card of my under 1-month old Lumix, mixed into a fancy compilation so you can easier see what the DMC-TZ20 really can do. Trough a series of shots in low light, motion, shaky and more. Everything was shot handheld. At the end are a few clips that holds their original sound as well.

Perfect, Thank you so much ☺️
Thank you so much for making this video, it is helping me alot! I just found some film rolls on eBay: 3 VTG KODACHROME II Movie Film Double 8mm 25FT. Do you know if they can be used in this camera? Best, Mariann
I'm happy it has helped you! That sounds about right, but beware no one processes kodakchrome to colour anymore, but you can get it black and white. Foma still makes film in this format too, if you want fresh film!
Thank you so much! I still struggle to find the right product. I Will be so grateful if you could send a link to one specific product / film. To be used in daylight 😅🤞🏻

Thank you, you are an angel 🫶🏻
He loses me at the point where he uses pliers directly on the front lens ring... NO!
That's fine, it's important to be cautious. I managed just fine :)
Thanks for your help learning about my new cam 😊
does not complicate your life! you don't need to cut the film. I always use my visit card I insert between the film and the flat spare part behind the film.
A fascinating watch, but I have difficulty in understanding why anyone , unless an absolute fan, would want to faff about like that…. Give me digital any day…. I do, understand that, these are very early cameras…
It's young people's things. We want to use these old cameras so that we could somehow feel nostalgic.
Thank you this was so helpful
Thanks for the video. I have a Rolleicord having the same lens shutter. Regarding the time from 10:28 to 12:06, I noticed the gear moving in and out freely while you pushing with you right hand. But my one doesn't move even I push it hard. Please could you advise? Thanks1
Same problem here, would be really thankful if anyone has an advice
Hi, i have exactly same camera. Got from my grandmother, who got from grand grandfather I gues 🙈 same problem, I will try to fix guided by this video. Also, I see that would be cool to clean the camera, how you would recommend? Any options to fix front eye finders glass? Looks broken. Thank you for answers 🙏
Also camera missing shooting button. Any options to replace to something else?
Hey, coming back to this great video again! I have a rather similar Balda Ovus shutter right now and the shutter has problems to cock. How do I fix that? Plus, I took out the retard gear housing, cleaned and lubricated it and it worked perfectly. However, it just started to stop working at 1s again and again. Do you have any ideas maybe :/
Hi :) Thank you so much for taking the time making tutorials and sharing the knowledge! I tried it on my Summitar copy, but it seems I have 1939 f12.5 version... not the same front assembly :/ Front optics are two seperate elements, I'm not able to remove the lower part and access aperture. So far I haven't found any info on that particular version's assembly. Would you happen to know how? Or to point me to the right tutorial ;) Many great Thanks :)
Hello! I am sadly not familiar with this version. I would suggest you to look up some Leica/vintage camera repair groups on Facebook or similar. Good luck! :)
@@Libsenth Thanks for the hint :) I'll look into it. Though it seems applying couple drops of 90% alcohol on the aperture setting ring did the trick for now. Most likely some old dirt there. But at one point complete cleaning and relub will sure do no harm ;) I also 3D printed an adapter and front cap and made some tests shots. Such A Lens!! Cheers :)
@@iomDaiom That's really cool! Alcohol can re-activate old grease, but it may also make it so thin it starts floating around. But I've had good success with this technique before. Good job!
Hi, do you need to fire off the 2 first shots at the start? Isn’t it just wasting 2 shots? Thanks.
As with all cameras, it's recommended to do at least 1-2 shots first to bring guaranteed fresh film to the gate. If not, your photo may have light leaks, or missing half the shot. It's not worse than that.
@@Libsenth Fantastic thank you!
Thank you! Just saved me a CLA>
Happy to hear!!
Only thing I would change would be, I actually begin my leader cut from the perforations and come down, rather than across from the front I found it was just easier that way. Very good explanation.
Good idea!
@@Libsenth I was getting that "hangnail" if I tried to make the turn, and sometimes, I was having to do some weird arcing curves to hit the gap between perforations, so I just reversed the process, hope that helps.
So this has to be loaded and unloaded in an obscure room.
Comming from only painting with citadel paints with brush this was intriguing to watch. 😄
Thanks man! And thanks for watching - loving your content, too. Been in the good ol' F3 rabbit hole recently :)
Do you know of any videos that show a proper way of disassembling a sumicron 50?
No I don't I'm afraid. :(
Insert a card into the film and you don't need to cut it!😀

My rewind knob spins but not very much, what might be wrong?
Love the olive drag schemes. This turned out great.
Thanks Neil! :)
This is a helpful video - but as many have said - the pliers are a very bad idea! First problem is the risk of slipping scratching the component you are gripping - or the lens - and the second is the risk of distorting it. It is essentially a thin brass ring, it doesn’t take much to damage it. The best tool to use is a friction tool - just a rubber stopper or block that you press onto the surface - it grips by friction without damaging anything.
This is true! Good point. I use a friction tool often. It would be a better choice here than the pliers.
Thank you very much just got a mark 3 and I am going to give it a try
They're great cameras. I use mine very often. Small, compact and does the job. Enjoy it!
Really nice lifehack in the forest or somewhere away from sizors :3 Nice
Thanks! Yeah, tool free is always best.
@@Libsenth Thats right ^^
Any advice / further reading on a wobbly summitar lens?
Excelente tutorial. I am wondering about if you could do it overall the shutter mechanism. It would be a wonderfull. Thank you mate. Cheers
Beautiful shutter sound.
Nice video, thanks
I'm having trouble removing the aperture ring, after removing the two screws. I don't want to use any tools on it. Could I safely wipe a little naphtha or alcohol around the outside to try to loosen it?
Thank you very, very much. I just got a Summitar with a very stiff aperture ring and had it fixed in five minutes after watching your video, it's now silky smooth.
Another one saved! Congratulations. Treat it well :)
If you get unlucky catch a snag on that bad angle teeth cut your curtain is shot damage
i'm mclovin it
i have a simular summitar, with the aperture f2 to f 16 lens, and it has a slight haze, what do you suggest to clean the lens? i wish i had seen this vid eariler, as i had the stuck aperture ring, and i paid to have it freed. i hope i can deal with the haze myself.
it is later than your lens ser 722755
@@Kalides Hi! I'm quite unsure to be honest. The two front elements are attached together. On some lenses, this is done by prying metal over one and forcing them together - but I have sadly never looked into this. I know there's some resources online, try googling and good luck! :)
Very clear to see and well explained. I have the same older version, actually works very smooth, but has an small area at the side of the rear elements of haze, or dried condensation? Hope it’s not separation. How do I get to the back group elements? Thanks
I'm afraid I've never looked more into this lens than shown in the video. But there's lots of good resources online, try googling for it - I'm sure you'll find something!
I just recevied a IIIF. Whats the point of cutting the film. I didnt and it was able to load and shoot fine. What am i gaining or missing by cutting my film
can I use a 100 iso roll film in my Leica IIIc?
Yes, you can use any iso film with this camera. Just expose accordingly.
My lens has dirt between the 1. and 2. element. I managed to open it up, but dissasembling the front element does not work. How am I supposed to open it? Just with friction or is there some hidden skrew? How does the front element look when dissasembled? Could you give me some advice how to tackle it?
Some Summitars has those elements wedged together by a metal flange you will need to open up to separate them - and then when you put them back together you will have to flange it back together sadly.
Wow, fantastic video! Instant sub.
Thanks so much!
Thank you for this. My new Leica IIIb + Summitar 5cm 1:2 lens arrived today, and the aperture ring was on upside down. A very easy fix after watching this video.
Thanks for the comment! I'm glad the video helps :)
